The Eagles are Coming! … Response, Spring 2008
April 6, 2008 by Jeffrey Overstreet
The Eagles are Coming!, my essay on the power of fantasy storytelling and fairy tales is published in the new issue of Response magazine. It features a new, original illustration by Bryan Pollard of the eagles rescuing Frodo and Sam at the climax of The Return of the King.
In this issue, which focuses on the theme of Hope, you’ll also find:
Remembering the Future
In 1967, The New York Times wrote “God Is Dead Doctrine Losing Ground to ‘Theology of Hope.’” The headline referenced a book by theologian Jürgen Moltmann, SPU’s guest at this year’s Day of Common Learning.
Beyond the Bounds
In anticipation of Moltmann’s visit to SPU, Art Department faculty spent more than a year creating a special exhibit: Hope: Open/Closed, a collection of works that together conveyed the freedom, fullness, and spontaneity of hope.

The Hope Factor
Why does one person flourish and another flounder in the same circumstances? Research in positive psychology demonstrates that those who thrive in life often possess the personality-related variable of hope.
Living in Hope
On the Day of Common Learning, an SPU economist posed one of the most difficult questions facing the world today: “Is eliminating extreme poverty in our lifetime an impossible dream — or an attainable goal?”
Response Essay Competition
Given a challenge — and the theme “engaging the culture, changing the world” — 2008 competition winners Lisa Lister and Jake Herzog responded with “Signs and Stories” and “The Assignment.”
Poetry by Emily Dickinson
SPU Professor Susan VanZanten Gallagher on Emily Dickinson’s Poem #314 and “Hope.”
The Advent of Breathing
SPU Professor Christen Mattix on “The Advent of Breathing.”

Thanks for posting, it’s an issue that I needed today. :-). I really liked your “The Eagles Are Coming” and “The Hope Factor”. That’s all I’ve had time to read so far, but I’m planning on reading more.
To add to my previous post–I got my first print issue yesterday and WOW, the artwork to “The Eagles are Coming” is really, really cool. The internet just doesn’t do it justice.
